As his oldest nephew, I recall many things about my uncle and the things he enjoyed. His favorite movies, sports, music, girlfriends, etc. One of his favorite singers was Stevie Wonder, and when the album “Songs in the Key of Life” came out in 1976, my uncle became infatuated with it.
He bought a new copy of the two-album set and played it over and over again. My grandmother, Goyita, would take it in stride and never complained. In addition to his trumpet practice at 10 pm, this album by Stevie Wonder was not appreciated as much by some of his neighbors — including his landlord.
One of the songs, “Summer Soft,” still resonates with me. When I hear it today, I remember him. It puts a smile on my face. His energy and joy for life captured in a song.
Enjoy!
